Project
The cable-stayed bridge over the Po River, spanning 400 meters and entirely made of concrete, is a globally significant infrastructure serving the Milan-Bologna high-speed railway line, designed to support train speeds of up to 350 km/h. Supervised by Italferr, the bridge forms the core of a 1,400-meter-long viaduct, Italy’s largest river crossing system, linking Lombardy and Emilia Romagna.
Intervention
Field S.r.l. implemented an advanced monitoring system for the bridge, restoring the entire pre-existing monitoring infrastructure and retrieving historical database records. As part of the intervention, a new data management plan was established using the web-based AIDA IoT platform, which also introduced critical alarm thresholds that trigger immediate notifications to the client if exceeded. The collected data is sent to an RFI operations center, which is active 24/7, analyzing structural and environmental information in real time.
Results
Since 2023, the monitoring system has ensured continuous and automated control of the bridge, guaranteeing the safe transit of trains and enabling targeted and efficient scheduled maintenance, improving safety of the bridge and of the surrounding transport networks.
