Structural Monitoring of Unipol Tower

Project

The UnipolSai Tower, an iconic skyscraper located in Milan’s Porta Nuova district, stands 23 stories above ground with three underground levels, covering a total area of 33,000 m² and reaching 125 meters in height. Featuring a distinctive X-shaped glass, wood, and steel structure, the building includes a 270-seat auditorium and a panoramic greenhouse. The project required a comprehensive monitoring system to ensure the structural safety of both the building and its foundations, utilizing advanced technology to track deformations, vibrations, and structural parameters.

Intervention

Field S.r.l. installed a complete monitoring system, including accelerometers, geophones, inclinometers, and pressure cells, all integrated with advanced data loggers for data acquisition. The installed instrumentation enables real-time monitoring of the building’s structural conditions, continuously acquiring data for analysis and processing through the AIDA IoT platform. Additionally, automated topographic systems, such as robotic total stations, were deployed for deformation measurement and alarm threshold management.

Results

The monitoring system provides continuous and precise assessment of the structural conditions, enabling timely interventions to prevent potential issues. The real-time data visualization enhances maintenance operations and improves the overall safety of the high-rise building, a landmark in Milan’s architectural landscape.
